Eco Inishowen

ECO Inishowen aimed to educate and raise awareness through local action initiatives and activities, integrating personal, environmental and community development. The cross-cutting themes take account of Sustainable Development, Fairtrade, LA 21 and the SDGs delivered through tangible and relevant local projects that join the dots between local and global issues, challenges and opportunities for people to “be the change”. Using an intergenerational approach, we work with people in the community to make a difference in their own lives, and at the same time the lives of others globally creating greater public awareness. Protecting and sustaining local communities’ shows leadership by acting locally to make a difference to our planet and society

ECO Inishowen initiaves reflect and act on the challenges of biodiversity loss and sustainable development projects at a local area level. These environmental concerns have been reflected across our Envision Conversation series within communities. People also want development to be circular and create ‘do no harm’ and ‘leave no trace’ eco-tourism possibilities. This work also ties into our health and wellbeing programmes, links with community gardens and schools work, to our Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) and to our Changemakers programme.

ECO Carn

ECO Carn is a collaborative project, formed in 2019 following the Envision Carn workshops, by a number of community organisations and agencies in Carndonagh with the support of Inishowen Development Partnership. The project is carrying out an Audit and develop a Biodiversity Action Plan for Carndonagh, and following a tender process Inishowen Rivers Trust is doing this work in collaboration with the network. The audit is funded by The Community Foundation for Ireland.

Through this year ECO Carn has carried out a biodiversity audit and action planning process due for completion July 2021. A survey was also conducted with 80 local traders to establish the level of interest and identify needs local businesses and gauge their knowledge. Our findings indicate an interest and openness to taking action on biodiversity loss. Some other highlights from 2020/21 include – Hedgerow seminar, Wildflower Calendar, Tree Week Video, and Videos on Donagh River and Oakwood. In 2021 a new project is underway Nature Positive (N+) building on the business survey and plans identified to address bio-diversity loss. We hope this progamme can be developed as a peninsula wide engagement with local small businesses. The network has also submitted an EOI, expressing interest in collaborating with the DCC Decarbonising Zone initiative.
