As part of the new PEACEPLUS “Inishowen Is Ours” project, we were delighted to lead a study visit to Rathlin Island with a group of passionate and engaged participants committed to addressing climate change, environmental sustainability and community development.
The trip brought together key stakeholders from across the region, including:
ACRES Donegal, Barrack Hill Community Garden, Clonmany Youth & Community Centre, Changemakers Donegal, Donegal County Council, Inishowen Rivers Trust, Sláintecare Healthy Communities, Inishowen SEC, ECO activists, and students from our recent ETB QQI Environmental and Sustainability course.
On Rathlin, we learned about the inspiring work of the Future Island–Island Project, a forward-thinking initiative exploring how island communities can adapt, sustain and thrive in the face of climate and economic challenges. Their design ecosystem integrates local knowledge with academic expertise and practical experience.
We also had the pleasure of hearing from the Rathlin Community Development Association, whose grassroots efforts showcase the power of community-led change – from the inside out. And from the LIFE Raft project whose aim is to restore the seabird colonies on Rathlin Island and benefit the Rathlin Community project, through managing and eradicating rats and ferrets from Rathlin Island for the benefit of its SPA features and other key species such as corncrake
It was an enlightening and inspiring day of shared experiences, deep learning, and meaningful connections between communities.
Together, we’re building a greener, more inclusive future — from Inishowen to Rathlin and beyond. 🌍🤝
This project is supported by PEACEPLUS; a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) through Donegal County Council
