AN INFORMATION session in Carndonagh is set to give people the unique opportunity to join a collective effort to install solar panels on their homes at a reduced cost.
Inishowen Sustainable Energy Community (ISEC) is hosting an information evening on a new community-driven solar initiative, the Solar PV “Meitheal”, in Carndonagh. The initiative aims to help local homeowners and small businesses to install solar panels at reduced costs through collective purchasing.
The event, which will take place on Thursday, April 3rd, at 8PM in Colgan Hall, will inform people about the benefits of solar energy, how to participate in the Solar Meitheal, and how it can make the switch to renewable energy more affordable. The event is the first of its kind for Inishowen.
SEAI Sustainable Energy Community Mentor Paul McNama will outline the financial and environmental benefits of solar PV, whilst also being able to advise on SEAI grants which are available for solar panels.
“A Solar Meitheal is a community-driven initiative that brings together the local community to group buy Solar PV,” explains Paul.
“By forming a local group, it becomes easier to source quotes from suppliers and installers through bulk purchases and to streamline the planning of multiple installations within the community.
“We can then guide the group through the process and give honest, independent advice.”
Aine McLaughlin, of Inishowen Development Partnership, who is lead partner of Inishowen Sustainable Energy Community, says this is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in solar panels but needs a little extra information or support.
“It’s great having the SEAI community mentor on board as they will be able to test the quotes, see which are the best value for money and provide his recommendations on the best options,” said Aine.
“By forming a Solar Meitheal, participants can negotiate better prices with solar suppliers, simplify the installation process, and take a significant step toward energy independence,” she added.
Residents who are interested in finding out more or how to become involved in the Meitheal are invited to attend the information session next Thursday 3rd April at 8pm in Colgan Hall.
Please note there is no obligation to proceed to become part of this process or to accept any quotes once received. All welcome to come along on the night.
