New Programme Launches in Carndonagh to Support Family Carers

Following the success of a previous initiative in Buncrana earlier this year, a new 8-week programme titled Care4Carers “Exploring Me” is set to launch this September, offering family carers a unique opportunity to focus on their own wellbeing, personal growth, and future planning.

Care4Carers is a tailor-made programme designed by Inishowen Development Partnership (IDP) specifically for those who dedicate their lives to informal unpaid caring roles for others.

The Exploring Me programme provides a much-needed space for carers to take time out for themselves. Participants will engage in a variety of enriching activities including:

  • Personal development and goal setting
  • Employment and training pathways
  • Health, nutrition, and wellbeing sessions
  • Self-care and work-life balance workshops
  • Arts, crafts, and healthy cooking classes

The programme runs for 2 hours per week at a central location in Carndonagh, and is open to family carers from across the region. It is facilitated by experienced professionals and supported by local community organisations.

The previous programme in Buncrana involved around 15 participants with the feedback being overwhelmingly positive.

“I thought this programme was very valuable because a lot of carers can feel isolated and chatting to likeminded people can be a great way to feel less alone,” one Lady said.

Others pinpointed activities such Signposting and referral opportunities, the healthy eating and wellness aspects, being taken out of their comfort zone and having the opportunity to speak with other carers in the same situation as being course highlights.

“All in all I really loved the course and feel it has definitely opened my mind to new ideas and prospects going forward,” added another participant.

Exploring Me is funded by the Department of Social Protection through the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2024, ensuring access to meaningful support and development opportunities for family carers.
