Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme

Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme (SHCP) is a national health and wellbeing programme offered across 20 pilot sites in Ireland. The Department of Health is looking at expanding this annually. Inishowen has been selected as one of the first pilot sites because of the HP Deprivation and Disadvantage rates. IDP hosts this programme in Inishowen for the Health Promotion and Improvement Department in the HSE. This is such a positive investment in the health and wellbeing across Inishowen and offers a menu of different supports and programmes as follows:

Project Supports:


SHCP – Community Food and Nutrition Workplan for Inishowen is developed annually and looks at approaches to community food and nutrition across Inishowen – examples of initiatives include air fryer courses, food waste and preservation courses, research into food inequality

SHCP Healthy Food Made Easy is a nutrition programme supporting people from across Inishowen to focus on healthy eating and cooking on a budget. The programme runs over 6 weeks for 2 hours per week in venues offered by our partners in the communities. It is supported by the HSE Dietetics Department with a dietician attending for a session in week 5.

SHCP Social Prescribing involves linking people with activities in their local area for health and well-being. Referrals come from many sources e.g. GP, CMHN, OT, Physio, Family and people can also self-refer, and it is at no cost to the individual. People use social prescribing if for example they are feeling lonely/isolated, have a limited friendship group or are new to the area; if they are experiencing relationship breakdown, bereavement, or family rifts; if they have come through redundancy, career changes or empty nesters; or if they are carers, experience anxiety/depression or have a recent diagnosis.

SHCP Parenting programmes from the Parents Plus (PP) suite is offered to parents of children aged 0-12 years. Programmes can run weekly for 6-8weeks for 2 hours per week. Programmes available:

  • PP Parenting Children with Special Needs
  • PP Parenting Children with ADHD
  • PP Parenting Healthy Families
  • PP Parenting Early Years
  • PP Parenting When Separated


Parent Support Workshops are offered each year to meet the needs of the parents who engage. These are on topics such as self-care, sleep, nutrition, mental health, space for tech at home….

SHCP We Can Quit Smoking Cessation (WCQ) – Participants are usually ready to consider quitting smoking and sign up for this group programme. It lasts on average 8 weeks and is co-facilitated by two community facilitators. They will support you to start the quitting journey and facilitate a group session each week for 8 weeks as well as supporting you in between sessions on a one-to-one basis. They also offer mental health tips, health checks, nutrition guidance and Nicotine Replacement Treatment (NRT) at no cost to participant.
