Event Details

Irish Film Institute’s Local Films for Local People

Join us for a trip down memory lane through film during the Bealtaine Festival this May, hosted by the Inishowen Development Partnership. The event will take place at Buncrana Cinema, St. Mary’s Hall. The programme will feature archive footage of Donegal from the Irish Film Institute (IFI), as well as local recordings from the past compiled by Hugh Quirke.

The programme includes professional and amateur films documenting various aspects of Inishowen and Donegal life from the 1950s on, such as nostalgic travelogues capturing the wild majesty of the county;  newsreels of the Angling Festival in Moville (1959), boat-building in Killybegs and carpentry projects in Teelin.

Highlights of the programme include Cursaí Ostáin (1957), a short documentary about a hotel course for young women in Bundoran (featuring participants from Inishowen), and Radharc’s Irish College Ranafast, documenting the experience of young Gaeltacht visitors in the early ‘60s.

After the screening, Patsy Toland from ChangeMakers Donegal at Inishowen Development Partnership will lead a discussion, followed by a music performance. Soup, sandwiches and refreshments will also be provided. €5 payable ‘on the door’ at Buncrana Cinema.
